Francois is a major character in the Delicious series, having made his debut in Delicious 2 and appeared in every game since. He is Emily's best friend and runs an interior decorating business. After completing each day, Emily receives credits (100–200, depending on the player's score) that can be used to buy decorations from Francois' interior design catalogues. These decorations range in price from 100 to 600 credits, with the combined price for all decorations in one restaurant always adding up to 2000 credit, so that the player may buy every decoration for the restaurant if they earn an expert score every day.

Personality

Francois' role in the games is to act as Emily's sidekick. He is generally bubbly and cheerful, and he has proven to be quite intelligent and perceptive at times. He is also a bit of a show-off. Francois can be very clumsy and he has a tendency to break things by accident. His clothing and manner in the game have suggested to some players that he is gay; however, he has not shown romantic or sexual interest towards either gender in any of the games to date.

Francois cares a lot about Emily and has stated several times that he would do anything to help her. He almost always puts her needs before his own throughout the series, and is subsequently dragged along on all of her adventures, whether he likes it or not.

Appearance

Francois is a tall and very slender young man. He is considered quite handsome, with shiny dark brown hair, big vibrant blue eyes (gray-blue in the later games), and strong cheekbones. He has a short, neatly kept moustache and goatee. He usually wears pink or purple clothes, jeans, and often a blue or light purple scarf.

He is American (or possibly British), but his name suggestes some French ancestry. (It is unlikely that he was born in France as he speaks the same unaccented English as everyone else, while Monsieur Alfonse from Delicious: Emily's Tea Garden speaks with an obvious French 'accent'.)

History

1970

Francois, like Emily, is 5 years old at the start of Delicious: Emily's Childhood Memories. He and Emily don't meet until years later (despite living next door to each other), but Francois' picture is shown in the decoration catalog, suggesting that he already lived in Fairfield when Emily and her family moved in. Most likely he was born there.

1980

Francois at the age of 12

Francois and Emily are 12 years old when they meet for the first time. Francois' parents are in financial trouble and Emily's family decide to help them out. Francois' mother is the only relative of his that is mentioned in the game. Since she is referred to by Evelyn as Ms. Truffaut, it is possible that she is widowed, divorced, or never married–or perhaps Evelyn simply doesn't know her marital status. Francois doesn't appear to have any siblings, although he only specifically mentions that he has no sisters, leaving open the possiblity that he might have one or more brothers. His father is never mentioned, but it is possible that one or both of Francois' parents are French.

1990

Francois and Emily are now 16 and are preparing for the school prom. During this time, Francois tries to help Emily get together with Hunter before the prom. In the end, Emily decides not to stay home, and tells Francois to go with Stacey. After the prom, Emily and Hunter finally share their first kiss, much to Francois' delight.

2000

Francois in his teenage years

Emily and Francois are now 21, and are helping Emily's uncle Antonio in his Italian restaurant. They plan to perfect and market Emily's grandmother's recipe for macaroons, but Emily ultimately sells the recipe to a local factory that is having financial problems. Francois doesn't agree with her decision at first, but eventually decides to accept it.

Delicious 2

Francois made his debut in Delicious 2. He appears early in the game, coincidentally running into Emily at the park, where Emily adresses him as her best friend and tells him that she will talk to him later. It is then revealed that Francois is an interior decorator and he advises Emily to fix up the place a bit. Emily agrees and gains access to his catalog. Later Emily asks him to clean tables for her, which he reluctantly agrees to do, until he gets fed up with it and refuses to help her anymore. He doesn't appear in the story after this, but the player can still buy decorations from his catalogue

Francois is somewhat moody in this game, and eventually Emily just leaves him alone.

Delicious: Emily's Tea Garden

Francois appears again as Emily's interior decorator, and also offers to build her tea garden for her. When

Emily gets tired of Brad hitting on her, she asks Francois for advice, who proceeds to pose as Emily's boyfriend. This keeps Brad out of Emily's hair for a while, until he discovers that Emily lied to him and gets upset with her. Later, Francois admits to Emily that he was the one who told Brad. After this he feels guilty and offers to help Emily by entertaining her guests in the tea garden.

Delicious: Emily's Taste of Fame

Francois and Emily head for the city to film Emily's new cooking show, but end up stranded in the small town of Snuggford after he crashes her car while trying to avoid a mouse in the road. Francois' appearances are intermittent until the car is fixed and the make it to city, where he cleans tables for the chooking chow. He is a bit disappointed when Emily decides that television is not for her, but he supports her decision and helps her get back to Snuggford in time for the town fair. During the fair a troublesome kid lights a box of fireworks, causing them to blow up in Francois' face. He is badly injured in the explosion, but Emily is able to resuscitate him and get him to a hospital. Francois seems to have made a full recovery by the next game and the incident is never mentioned again.

Delicious: Emily's Holiday Season

Francois helps Emily to organize her Christmas party, and supports her through the ups and downs in her relationships with Richard and Paul. At the end of the game, the player is given the opportunity to choose which man Emily should end up with - Richard or Paul as boyfriends, or Francious as her best friend. Francois strongly favours Richard over Paul, but encourages Emily to follow her heart.

Delicious: Emily's Childhood Memories

This game follows Francois and Emily through their first meeting, and chronicles some of the things they've been through together. In the current timeline of 2010, Francois assists Emily as an entertainer by using her old tricycle.

Delicious: Emily's True Love

Emily recives a message from 16 years ago. It's from her summer romance in Paris, Jean Paul. Francois convices Emily to go to Paris and take in charge of the Restaurant when Emily leaves.

Delicious: Emily's Wonder Wedding

Emily promises to let him be her maid of honor in the wedding. Francois also using his lottery tickets winning $5000 to buy Emily plane ticket so she can co to Ireland, throw the penny in the well and find some luck. He wants to catch the bouquet, and this depends on choice of player.

Delicious: Emily's Honeymoon Cruise

He works in the swimming pool of Jimmy's Cruise. Soon he gets jealous with Josh the kid, so he revenges Josh. Josh is very angry but then they are back to be friends in the end.

Onomatology

Francois or François is a French name wich means 'Frenchman' or 'free'. It is possible that Francois was given his name by the creators because in the Netherlands, where the games are created, French names (especially Pierre or François) are often considered 'gay'. Optionally, he could be named after François Truffaut, a French filmmaker.

Trivia

• In Delicious: Emily's Tea Garden, Francois tells Emily that he went to school with Monsieur Alfonse's son, implying that he and Emily attended different schools. In Delicious: Emily's Childhood Memories, Emily and Francois attended high school together; however, it is possibile that they went to different elementary schools.
